Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma: a rare case report and review of literature

2014

Objectives: Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma is a rare condition characterized by ameloblastic-like islands of epithelial cells with aberrant keratinitation in the form of Ghost cell with varying amounts of dysplastic dentina. Material and Methods: We report a case of a 70 year-old woman with a rapid onset of painful swelling right maxillary tumor. Magnetic resonance showed a huge tumor dependent on the right half of the right hard palate with invasion of the pterygoid process and focally to the second branch of the trigeminal. Radiological stage was T4N0. The patient underwent a right subtotal maxillectomy with clear margins. Adjuvant radiotherapy was given. The patient was free of residua…

Matrical carcinoma with prominent melanocytic hyperplasia (malignant melanocytic matricoma?) A report of two cases.

2003

Melanocytic matricoma is a recently described lesion characterized by well-circumscribed nodules composed of matrical and supramatrical cells with clustered ghost cells, and admixed pigmented dendritic melanocytes, with no cyst formation or connection to the epidermis or pre-existing hair follicles. Although variable cytologic atypia and frequent mitoses in the epithelial component may be present, given the well-defined margins and absence of tumor recurrences, these lesions were initially considered benign neoplasms, and not matrical carcinoma. Theoretically, the detection of numerous melanocytes in matrical carcinoma should not be surprising, but is in fact a very unusual feature. A case …

Peripheral Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst : a rare case report

2018

The Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst (COC) is a simple cyst lined by ameloblastoma-like epithelium with ghost cells. The peripheral COC is a rare lesion and few reports have been published considering its clinical and histopathological features. This article aimed to report on a case of a peripheral COC, discussing its clinical, imaginological and histopathological features. A 9-year-old male patient presented a 10x5 mm painless nodule in the palatal mucosa of the left central incisor. Panoramic, occlusal and periapical radiographs did not show alterations. A computed tomography exam showed a slight soft tissue swelling located in the palatal mucosa of the left maxillary central incisor. An exci…

Recurrent odontogenic ghost cell carcinoma (OGCC) at a reconstructed fibular flap : a case report with immunohistochemical findings

2010

Odontogenic ghost cell carcinoma (OGCC), a malignant counterpart of the odontogenic ghost cell tumor (OGCT), with aggressive growth characteristics, is exceedingly rare. A painful swelling in the jaw with local paresthesia is the most common symptom. We described a case of 47-year Korean woman who had a rare central epithelial odontogenic ghost cell carcinoma which recurred at reconstructed fibular flap. Immunohistochemical differences between OGCT and OGCC analyzed using primary and recurred surgical specimen. On the basis of this case, the tumor started as an OGCT and transformed into OGCC with highly aggressive, rapidly growing, infiltrative tumors. Our findings suggest that some of the …
